Mel Robbins

Melanie Robbins (born October 6, 1968) is an American podcast host, author, motivational speaker, and former attorney. She hosts The Mel Robbins Podcast, which as of 2025 is the most shared and most followed podcast in the world, ranked #3 by both Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Robbins earned a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1994. She practised as a public defender in New York City in the mid-1990s and later worked as a criminal defence attorney. She subsequently transitioned to television, serving as a legal analyst for CNN.

Personal crisis and the 5 Second Rule

By her own account, Robbins experienced a significant personal and financial collapse around age 41. She was unemployed, facing serious debt, and struggling with anxiety. During this period she developed what she later termed the "5 Second Rule," a metacognition technique in which a person counts backward from five before taking action, intended to interrupt habitual hesitation. The concept became the basis of her public career.

Public speaking and TEDx

In 2011 Robbins delivered a TEDx talk at TEDxSF titled "How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over," which became one of the most-viewed TEDx presentations, accumulating tens of millions of views. The talk's success established Robbins as a figure in the self-improvement space and led to a corporate speaking career.

Books

Robbins has published three major books:

  • The 5 Second Rule (2017). A bestseller elaborating her signature concept, with applications to productivity, confidence, and habit formation.
  • The High 5 Habit (2021). Focused on self-encouragement practices and mindset reframing.
  • The Let Them Theory (2024). Centred on relinquishing control over others' behaviour. The book became the #1 selling book of 2025, with over nine million copies sold.

The Mel Robbins Podcast

Robbins launched the podcast in 2022. The show features a mix of solo episodes (in which Robbins presents research-backed frameworks and practical tools) and interviews with experts in psychology, neuroscience, and health. Notable episodes include conversations with Dr. Gabor Maté on trauma, health and fitness reset series, and episodes on personal agency.

In 2025 the show was nominated for the first-ever Golden Globe Award for Best Podcast.

Style

Robbins's delivery is direct and research-oriented. She structures episodes around actionable techniques, frequently citing academic studies. She intersperses personal vulnerability, discussing her own anxiety, marriage difficulties, and parenting challenges, with prescriptive advice. The tone is earnest rather than performative.

Cross-show context

Robbins occupies a similar thematic lane to Steven Bartlett, whose Diary Of A CEO frequently covers self-improvement and personal development. Both shows draw from the same pool of expert guests (neuroscientists, psychologists, and health researchers), though Robbins's format is more prescriptive and Bartlett's more narrative.
