News Podcasting

News podcasting is represented in the top 10 by The Daily. Dateline NBC also bridges news journalism and true crime.

Primary show

The Daily is produced by The New York Times and follows a consistent format: one story, explored in depth, in approximately 20 minutes, six days per week. The show is hosted by Michael Barbaro, with Rachel Abrams, Natalie Kitroeff, and Sabrina Tavernise serving as additional hosts and regular correspondents.

The Daily's format is narrative journalism. Episodes are produced and structured rather than conversational. Reporters and experts are interviewed within a scripted framework. This stands in contrast to the long-form interview format that dominates the rest of the top 10.

Structural contrast

The Daily represents a fundamentally different model from the interview shows that hold seven of the top 10 positions:

This contrast is examined further in The Dominance of Interview Format.

Dateline NBC

Dateline NBC straddles news and true crime. It originated as a television newsmagazine and retains the production values and institutional backing of NBC News. Its podcast adaptation focuses on in-depth investigations, primarily of criminal cases. Keith Morrison's narration is a recognized stylistic signature.

Institutional vs. independent

The Daily and Dateline NBC are the only shows in the top 10 backed by major media institutions (The New York Times and NBC News, respectively). The remaining eight are hosted by independent creators or small production companies. This ratio illustrates the shift in podcast power from institutions to individuals, though institutional shows retain significant chart presence.
