Theo Von

Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski III (born March 19, 1980), known professionally as Theo Von, is an American comedian, podcast host, and television personality. He hosts This Past Weekend, one of the most successful independently produced podcasts in the United States.

Early life

Von was born in Covington, Louisiana, a small city on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. His upbringing was marked by instability: he was legally emancipated at age 14 and his father died when Von was 16. He has spoken extensively on his podcast about growing up in the rural South, his family's eccentricities, and his early exposure to drugs and poverty. These experiences form a recurring wellspring for his comedy and public persona.

Education

Von earned a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from the University of New Orleans in 2011, completing his degree at age 31, well after his entertainment career had begun. He has referenced his unconventional academic path in interviews as reflective of a broader pattern of late-blooming development.

Television career

At age 19 Von was cast on Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour (2000), an MTV reality competition series. He subsequently appeared in four seasons of The Challenge, MTV's long-running competition franchise. This early television exposure introduced him to a national audience, though he later pivoted away from reality television toward stand-up comedy.

Von relocated to Los Angeles around age 23 to pursue comedy full-time. He appeared on Last Comic Standing season 4 (2006) and performed on the club circuit for years before achieving broader recognition. He has released comedy specials on Netflix and is currently touring with his Return of the Rat Tour.

This Past Weekend

Von's podcast features a mix of solo episodes (in which he riffs on personal stories, listener voicemails, and current events) and guest interviews. The show draws millions of weekly listeners and has become a significant platform in its own right, attracting guests who range from comedians and athletes to politicians and musicians.

Notable guests have included Jordan Peterson, Bobby Lee, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tucker Carlson, Dana White, Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, and Joey Diaz, among many others.

Style

Von's interviewing and monologue style is defined by absurdist humour, Southern vernacular, and personal vulnerability. He frequently pivots from jokes to earnest reflections on addiction, mental health, loneliness, and faith. His comedy depends heavily on spontaneous metaphor and surreal imagery, a style that is difficult to replicate and has generated a devoted online following through clips and memes.

Guest appearances

Von is a frequent guest on other major podcasts, including The Joe Rogan Experience, where his appearances have been among the show's most popular comedy episodes. The overlap between Von's audience and Rogan's is substantial.

Cross-show context

Von's show shares notable guest overlap with The Shawn Ryan Show and The Joe Rogan Experience in the political space. All three hosted Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson during the 2024 election cycle. The contrast in interview styles across the three shows with the same guest illustrates the breadth of the podcasting medium: Rogan's is loose and wide-ranging, Ryan's is operational and policy-focused, and Von's is comedic and personal.
