Joe Rogan

Joseph James Rogan (born August 11, 1967) is an American comedian, podcast host, UFC commentator, and television presenter. He hosts The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), the most-streamed podcast on Spotify for five consecutive years and one of the most listened-to audio programmes in history.

Early life and comedy

Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey. He began performing stand-up comedy in 1988 on the Boston club circuit. In 1994 he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue television and film work.

Television career

Rogan's early television credits include the sitcom Hardball (1994) and the NBC sitcom NewsRadio (1995–1999), in which he was a series regular. He hosted the NBC reality competition Fear Factor from 2001 to 2006, which brought him mainstream visibility.

UFC commentary

Rogan has worked as a colour commentator and interviewer for the Ultimate Fighting Championship since 1997, making him one of the longest-tenured figures in the organisation. He holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Eddie Bravo and a black belt in taekwondo, and his commentary is informed by his own martial arts practice.

The Joe Rogan Experience

Rogan launched the JRE on December 24, 2009, initially as a free video and audio programme recorded in his home studio. The show's format is unstructured long-form conversation, with episodes typically lasting two to four hours. Guests range across comedy, science, politics, combat sports, music, and fringe topics.

Spotify deals

In May 2020 Spotify announced an exclusive licensing deal with Rogan valued at a reported $200 million. The show moved exclusively to Spotify in September 2020. In February 2024 Rogan signed a renewed deal reportedly worth $250 million, under which the podcast returned to multiple platforms while maintaining a partnership with Spotify.

Notable episodes

The October 2024 interview with Donald Trump accumulated over 20 million YouTube views within 20 hours of upload. The September 2018 interview with Elon Musk remains the all-time most-viewed JRE episode at approximately 69 million YouTube views; the episode became widely known for a segment in which Musk smoked cannabis on air. Other significant guests have included Kanye West, Edward Snowden, Bernie Sanders, and Magnus Carlsen.

Controversies

In January 2022 a group of 270 scientists, physicians, and public health professionals signed an open letter to Spotify citing concerns about COVID-19 misinformation broadcast on the JRE. Musicians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell subsequently removed their catalogues from Spotify in protest. The episode involving Robert Malone, a physician who promoted vaccine scepticism, was central to the dispute. Rogan issued a public response acknowledging he is "not a doctor" and pledged to feature more opposing viewpoints.

Finances

Rogan's estimated net worth is approximately $200 million. His annual earnings have been reported in the range of $60–110 million, making him one of the highest-paid figures in audio media.

Interviewing style

Rogan's approach is characterised by its lack of formal structure. He allows conversations to meander across topics, rarely interrupts, and frequently shares his own experiences and opinions. The atmosphere is casual. Guests sit across a table with microphones, often consuming whiskey or other beverages. This looseness is central to the show's appeal and has been credited with drawing unusually candid responses from high-profile guests.
